Investing in Teachers, Transforming Classrooms
Renovating the Teacher Dormitories at the
Virgin del Rosario School
High in the Andes of Sullumayo, within the province of Quispicanchi, educators at the Virgin del Rosario School have long demonstrated extraordinary dedication to their students. Their commitment, however, has required daily sacrifices that extend far beyond the classroom.
Many teachers travel from Cusco, a journey exceeding three hours each way. Because of this distance, teachers must live on campus during the school week — in conditions that are, quite simply, unfit for the professionals shaping the future of this community.
The Reality Teachers Face
Until now, teacher housing has consisted of crude structures lacking basic necessities. There is no heating to protect against the harsh mountain cold. Running water is unavailable. Bathrooms are nonfunctional. Portions of the roof remain open to the elements, allowing wind and rain to pass freely into living spaces.
These challenges are more than inconveniences — they directly affect well-being, morale, and the ability of teachers to rest, recharge, and prepare for their students.
Why Teacher Living Conditions Matter
Educational research consistently shows that teacher satisfaction and sense of value strongly influence student outcomes. When teachers feel supported, comfortable, and respected, their instruction becomes more effective, their engagement deepens, and students benefit.
Recognizing this critical connection, the Quispicanchi Project adopted an initiative to fully renovate the teacher dormitories — not simply as a construction project, but as an investment in educational quality.
A Comprehensive Renovation Effort
The renovation will dramatically improve daily life for resident educators. Planned upgrades include:
Installation of durable wood flooring throughout
Replastering and restoration of interior walls
New ceilings and insulation for protection from cold and rain
Complete plumbing systems with fully functioning interior bathrooms
Construction of a new kitchen
Creation of common spaces for collaboration and shared meals
Addition of at least one new dormitory room to expand housing capacity
These improvements are designed to foster comfort, dignity, and community — creating an environment where teachers can thrive both personally and professionally.
Collaboration Rooted in Local Expertise
In November, Senior Project Advisor for construction initiatives, Brian Brueckner, visited the region to work alongside local specialists. The visit focused on refining the project scope and understanding regional building techniques, ensuring that renovations align with local materials, climate conditions, and craftsmanship.
Brian will soon return with Executive Director Gina House to observe progress and participate in a milestone moment for the school community.
Looking Ahead: Opening Day
The newly renovated dormitories are scheduled to open on March 15, just in time for the start of the academic year. This date marks more than the completion of a building project — it represents a meaningful step toward supporting educators who devote their lives to students in remote communities.
By improving teacher living conditions, we aim to strengthen belonging, increase satisfaction, and ultimately elevate the learning experience for every child at Virgin del Rosario School.
