Opening Doors to New Possibilities
Investing in teacher well-being to strengthen education and expand opportunity in Sullumayo
The Quispicanchi Project recently celebrated a powerful milestone in Sullumayo with the ribbon-cutting of newly renovated teacher dormitories at the Virgen del Rosario School. Joined by our senior leadership team, in-country staff, students, and families, the day marked not just the completion of a project—but the beginning of a new chapter for the educators who serve this community.
Over the past three months, we have worked closely with the school to transform the teacher living spaces. Prior to renovation, teachers faced extremely challenging conditions, with dirt floors, damaged roofs, and exposure to wind and rain. These conditions made it difficult for educators to rest, recharge, and bring their best to the classroom each day.
In Peru, public school teachers are assigned to their placements, often serving in communities far from where the live. While they may not have chosen Sullumayo, they show up each day with dedication, care, and a deep commitment to their students. Their passion for serving this community is clear—and it makes it all the more important that they are supported in return.
We believe deeply that teacher well-being is essential to student success. Research consistently shows that when educators are supported and cared for, student learning outcomes improve. With this in mind, we made a strategic decision at the end of last year to invest in the people at the heart of education—teachers. These newly renovated dormitories are a reflection of that commitment.
The inauguration was filled with meaning and tradition. Executive Director Gina House and Project Founder Michael Riemer joined the celebration by smashing clay jars filled with chicha, a symbolic act representing the breaking open of new possibilities and the start of something new. Each dormitory room was then officially opened with a ribbon-cutting, signifying a fresh beginning for the teachers who will call these spaces home.
Surrounded by the energy and joy of students and parents, the day was a true community celebration—one rooted in hope, dignity, and shared purpose. These improved living conditions will not only support teacher well-being, but also strengthen the quality of education for every child at Virgen del Rosario School.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who has invested in our Building Together campaign to make projects like this possible. Your support is helping create safe, dignified spaces where educators can thrive—and where students can benefit from stronger, more consistent teaching. As we look ahead, we are inspired by what this investment represents: a belief that lasting change begins by caring for those who make learning possible. Together, we are creating an environment where teachers can thrive—and where students can reach their full potential.
